5 IKEA Hacks That Look Way More Expensive ✨
The reason a $99 IKEA piece looks like a $99 IKEA piece is almost never the wood. It's the legs, the handles, and the finish. Swap any two of those three on the same piece, and people start asking where you got it.
1. Replace the legs (this is the big one)
The single highest-impact IKEA hack. Etsy has tapered wooden legs in walnut, oak, or brass for $20–$40 a set. Five minutes with a screwdriver and your KALLAX, MALM, or BESTÅ stops looking like a starter apartment and starts looking like a small studio's first real piece.

Etsy · $282. Swap the knobs and pulls
The standard IKEA pulls are functional and forgettable. Brushed brass cup pulls or solid leather pulls take any drawer-fronted piece up two notches. Cost: ~$3 each.
✦ Pick
Solid leather drawer pulls (set of 4)
They patina beautifully over time and pair with both warm wood and white lacquer. Comes with brass screws — don't use the cheap silver ones that ship with most knob sets.
3. Add a contoured base molding
If you have a flat-fronted IKEA piece (LACK shelf, BESTÅ unit), a strip of $6 hardware-store base molding glued and painted along the bottom edge instantly removes the "kit furniture" tell. Five minutes per shelf.
4. Replace the back panel of an open shelf
KALLAX comes hollow-backed by default. Cut a sheet of grasscloth wallpaper, beadboard panel, or even a piece of fabric to fit the back of one cube. Suddenly it's "styled" instead of "stored".

Amazon · $245. Refinish the top with a rub-on stain
IKEA's pale birch finish reads cheap because it's too pale. A $14 jar of warm walnut rub-on stain (the gel kind, not the liquid kind) takes one evening and adds 20 years of warmth. No sanding, no fumes, no streaks.
✦ Pick
Rub-on gel stain — warm walnut
Goes on with a rag, dries in two hours, and turns a flat birch top into something that reads like reclaimed wood. The gel formula doesn't drip or pool.
The cheapest furniture in your apartment is also the most editable. That's the whole secret.
If you only do one: replace the legs. Same screws, same drawer fronts, totally different vibe.
